American sitcoms like Friends and Seinfeld are popular internationally, with many people ELR Charlie has met anecdotally crediting watching Friends with the improvement of their English level. In this special edition of American Identity, we'll explore the history of the American sitcom, how it started, why so many older sitcoms endure, and how the format has evolved in the streaming era.

Mt. Everest, called Sagarmatha or "peak of heaven" in Nepalese, was first summited in 1953. Since then, a burgeoning tourism industry has grown around climbing Everest. Very rich people often wait years and pay tens of thousands of dollars to join a group that is ascending to the summit, and to say that they've been to the roof of the world. This has come at a cost- Everest is overcrowded, and the large numbers of people are causing heretofore unseen environemental degradation, in addition to labor exploitation issues around the local Sherpa guides. We'll discuss all things Everest- what it's like to climb it, why people climb it, and whether the environmental impacts of the Everest climbing industry are worth it.

Drawing on his experience as an entrepreneur, investor, and mentor, Vasyl will share his perspective on the people, networks, and dynamics that drive Silicon Valley and help founders turn ideas into opportunities.

ELR Charlie has just returned from his summer holidays, and once again he has news to share from the outside world. There is perhaps no image of America more ubiquitous than the cowboy. Close your eyes and you can see him now, blazing dusty trails surrounded by cacti and sweat. But who were the actual cowboys? Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for: the first book discussion session of Between the Lines Book Club. Join us this week for our full discussion of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, as well as our announcement of next month's book.

In a world that often celebrates being busy, taking time to slow down can feel surprisingly difficult. How do we spend our downtime, and why do so many of us feel pressure to stay productive even when we need a break?
