We at America House Kyiv love to read, and we know many of you love to read too. We’re happy to announce the launch of our new Between the Lines Book Club. Between the Lines Book Club will be an exploration of American literature past and present. We’ll visit some old favorites like Hemingway, and meet some contemporary stars such as Donna Tartt.

Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of Homer's Odyssey released a few weeks ago to mostly acclaim, but still some criticism. Some, including experts in the classics such as Emily Wilson, have heavily critiqued Nolan's departures from the original work. How much does historical accuracy matter in adaptation? For our 9th session of Poetry in the Garden this summer, we'll begin an exploration of emotional themes in poetry. This week we'll be reading Try to Praise the Mutilated World by Adam Zagajewski, which gained fame after being published in The New Yorker magazine shortly after the September 11th attacks. For our 8th session of Poetry in the Garden, we'll be looking at poetry in translation. For this special session, we'll be reading a poem by Serhiy Zhadan, Perhaps It's Time To Start Now (Може саме тепер і варто почати). In the comfort of our garden space, we'll explore Zhadan's poetry in the original Ukrainian as well as its English translation, and discuss what's lost (and what's not) in translation.
