Mt. Everest, called Sagarmatha or "peak of heaven" in Nepalese, was first summited in 1953. Since then, a burgeoning tourism industry has grown around climbing Everest. Very rich people often wait years and pay tens of thousands of dollars to join a group that is ascending to the summit, and to say that they've been to the roof of the world. This has come at a cost- Everest is overcrowded, and the large numbers of people are causing heretofore unseen environemental degradation, in addition to labor exploitation issues around the local Sherpa guides. We'll discuss all things Everest- what it's like to climb it, why people climb it, and whether the environmental impacts of the Everest climbing industry are worth it.
