Join us this week at America House Kyiv as we continue our weekly sports programming. On December 5th at 18:30, we’re hosting a special screening of an American classic, 2006's Friday Night Lights. Based on H.G. Bissinger's book, which profiled the economically depressed town of Odessa, Texas and their heroic high school football team, The Permian High Panthers. After the film, ELR Charlie will lead a discussion on the film and the cultural importance of high school football in the United States.

American Identity With Charlie: Revolutionary Values
Last year, America House Kyiv presented American Identity, an interactive journey through American history that attempted to answer the question "what is America?" This year, we're bringing it back, attemping to answer that same question through a new lens. For this series, we'll be focusing on the country's origins and looking at the evolution of American identity from colonial times all the way through the end of the American Revolution and the ratification of the US Constitution.

Set in Longfellow's native New England, it explores human relationships, the passage of time, and the enduring power of memory.

Poetry in the Garden With Charlie: Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson is considered one of the giants of American poetry. Working in the 19th century, her poetry is characterized by unconventional capitalization, dashes, slant rhyme, and exploration of profound themes like, death, nature, and the self. This session, we'll be doing a comparative reading of two of Dickinson's most well known poems — "Crumbling is not an instant's Act" and "After great pain, a formal feeling comes."

Hughes was born in Missouri and travelled extensively across the US and abroad before settling in New York City and becoming part of a vaunted cultural and social movement. His poetry explores the working class experiences of men and women in various parts of the United States.
