Drawing on her Indiana University course, "The Anthropology of Dolly Parton” and her forthcoming book on Parton’s global cultural legacies, Dr. Sarah D. Phillips will discuss Dolly Parton as an American cultural icon. We will explore how in her song lyrics, her musical and film performances, and her public philanthropy, Parton promoted the interests of women, the poor, and other marginalized groups and shone a spotlight on the unique cultures of rural Appalachia. Phillips will provide reading recommendations, share her students’ research on Dolly Parton, and answer audience questions about this singular symbol of the American values of freedom, hard work, and generosity towards others.
