Women in Fire

Prior to December 2018 it was illegal for women to be firefighters in Ukraine. Similar restrictive regulations in the U.S. have contributed to the legacy of gender discrimination in this and other professions traditionally held by men. However, leaders in both the U.S. and Ukraine are not only giving a voice to women but are actively working to break down barriers that actively keep women out of such fields. And, today more women around the world are joining the ranks of the wildland firefighters.

In this webinar, veteran wildland firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service will talk about:

🔸What inspired them to become wildland firefighters;
🔸Successes and challenges they have faced;
🔸Ways in which they work with their partners and families to share in the demands of home and work;
🔸Ways they take care of themselves in physically demanding jobs that can sometimes take them away for weeks at a time;
🔸The positive impact of gender diversity in an era of increasing numbers of large, global wildfires.

Speakers:
🔹Matt Wills, Wildland Firefighter and Program Specialist with the USFS International Programs Office;
🔹Renee Jack, Wildland Firefighter and Fire Program Specialist with the USFS International Programs Office;
🔹Sue Stewart, Wildland Firefighter one of only eight Regional Directors for the USFS Fire & Aviation; and
🔹Giselle Denzel-Koehn, Wildland Firefighter and Training Center Manager for the USFS Coronado National Forest talk about their experiences as wildland firefighters.

We’ll be streaming this session to our Facebook page June 15th. Join us at 6:00 pm and feel free to ask any questions you have.
