Book Presentation: Disability and Mobile Citizenship in Post-Soviet Ukraine: A Cultural History of the Ukrainian Disability Rights Movement

Sarah Phillips is Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. She is author of Women's Social Activism in the New Ukraine (2008, Indiana University Press), as well as many articles about gender, health, medicine, and culture in Ukraine. During 1998-2009 Phillips conducted research in Ukraine for her second book, Disability and Mobile Citizenship in Postsocialist Ukraine, published by Indiana University Press in 2010. A revised and updated version of the book is now available in Russian translation by Kharkiv University Press. In this talk Phillips will highlight key trends and challenges in the struggle for equal rights for people with disabilities in Ukraine today. She will also discuss the process of researching and writing the book using ethnographic methods, which involves long-term fieldwork using participant observation and detailed interviews, including life history interviews.
